Before welding begins, ensure that the welding procedure specification, filler metal, joint preparation and temperature control are all release-ready.
- A welding procedure specification is on hand whose procedure qualification representatively covers the grade, thickness, joint type and position.
- The filler metal matches the welding procedure specification, has been re-dried, and its hydrogen class is documented.
- The joint is mechanically prepared, or a thermally cut edge has been machined back at least 2 millimetres, and is bright and dry.
- Fit-up and root gap are consistent; tack welds are at least 50 millimetres long, made under preheat, and inspected.
- The residual field in the joint is below the defined limit value.
- The preheat temperature has been reached, measured on the thicker plate within the 75-millimetre zone, with a wait of 2 minutes per 25 millimetres of thickness.
- Interpass temperature monitoring is set up and a data logger is running.
- The plus 25 degrees Celsius allowance has been checked for heavy restraint, high humidity or temperatures below plus 5 degrees Celsius.
