For whom
Skilled workers and apprentices in metalworking businesses who wish to learn or refresh the fundamentals of drilling, countersinking and reaming, as well as Werkleiter and Geschäftsführer who want to understand what their workshop is talking about when the subject is drill breakage, allowance or fit tolerance. No prior knowledge required. The course is machine-independent: it covers the three processes in accordance with DIN 8589-2, whether working by hand, at the pillar drill or on a machining centre.
What you will be able to do afterwards
- Classify drilling, countersinking and reaming in accordance with DIN 8589-2 and distinguish between them
- Differentiate drilling processes and drilling tools by construction and field of application
- Assign countersinking processes to the appropriate application (e.g. screw-head recessing)
- Classify reaming as a finishing operation and state the usual allowance and achievable tolerance classes
- Make a broadly correct assessment of cutting speed, feed rate and cutting fluid supply
- Assign typical fault patterns (drill breakage, wandering, burr formation, wear) to a probable cause
How the course works
Seven lessons with approximately 100 minutes of reading time, completable in any number of sessions: from an introduction to the processes through tools and parameters to safe working practice. A self-assessment test at the end: 14 questions, for self-checking, repeatable as often as required. On completion, a certificate of participation is available as a PDF.
What the course is not
There is no detailed machining calculation (cutting force, power), no cycle programming on a specific CNC control, no detailed coverage of tapping and no deep-hole drilling techniques. It does not replace an apprenticeship as a Zerspanungsmechaniker or induction into site-specific health and safety rules.
