For whom
Skilled workers and apprentices who want to refresh or acquire basic PLC knowledge, as well as works managers and Geschäftsführer (managing directors) who want to understand what their electricians and maintenance staff are talking about, without programming themselves. No prior knowledge of electrical engineering or programming is required. The course is manufacturer-neutral: it covers the fundamentals to IEC 61131, not the operation of a specific programming environment such as TIA Portal, TwinCAT, or CODESYS.
What you will be able to do afterwards
- Distinguish between hard-wired control and programmable logic control and identify their respective advantages and disadvantages
- Describe the structure of a PLC: CPU, inputs/outputs, centralised and decentralised configurations, bus systems
- Classify basic concepts: programme cycle, flags, counters, timers
- Broadly distinguish between the five programming languages to IEC 61131-3 (LD, FBD, IL, ST, SFC)
- Read a simple sequential control (step chain)
- Classify basic principles of machine safety in PLC applications (emergency stop, safety PLC, Performance Level)
How the course works
Eight lessons with approximately 110 minutes of reading time, completable in any number of sessions: from basic structure through programming languages and sequential control to machine safety. A self-test at the end: 16 questions, for self-assessment, repeatable as often as required. Upon completion, a certificate of participation is available as a PDF.
What the course is not
No specific programming environment (TIA Portal, TwinCAT, CODESYS, Studio 5000), no hands-on programme creation on a real controller, and no in-depth coverage of specialist fieldbus protocols. It does not replace controller-specific instruction or vocational training as an electronics technician for automation technology.
